History and family tree of the FRICK family, originally from the village Zell, today Esslingen,

�and Altbach, located near of Stuttgart, Germany, can be retraced now for approximately 500 years.

It is a moved history between wine gardening in the Swabian heartland, emigration and settlement in German villages in Bessarabia/Moldava, resettlement to Warthegau/ Poland in WW2, emigration to Canada and resettlement in different parts of Germany after WW2.

 

The building of this complete chronicle over five centuries is to be owed to two lucky circumstances: Being present the chronicles of Gnadental and Eichendorf in Bessarabia and the working of the Altbacher homeland researcher Gerhard Krapf, who documented 1994 the Frick line in Zell /Altbach after evaluation of church books in family sheets. Only the connection of these sources results in time series over 14 generations, which were extended by historical notes from the homeland book of Altbach. The aim of this work is to retain and to continue the knowledge about FRICK ancestors and their living circumstances.

The following family chronicle started in October 2001.� Completeness is not claimed and it should a beginning for further research and data determination. But everything listed below is carefully checked for truth and liability. Productive sources of search result are also based on sources in the internet. The following genealogy report was provided with help of the program �Family Treemaker� 7.5.�

Jacob Frick, born about 1510, in the family and soul registers of the Evangel..

church of Zell and Altbach designated as �"old Jakob�, married about 1530/35 with ??, is obviously� the master father of the Zell/Altbacher Frick line. His three sons were called Jerg=Georg, old Michael and Jakob. While from Georg the male descendants let themselves be proven on the basis of the Zell/Altbach church books to approximately

1740 and in the case of� Michael up to the present,� son Jacob descendants can only be� proven up to the second generation. He� was in first marriage 1565 with Barbara Purtscheller and in second marriage with. .... Part=Barth.

The church books of the Evangel. Church of Zell (later Oberamt OA Esslingen) began in the year 1558. In 1530 the reformation started in Esslingen, in whose attendants church books, so called christening -, marriage- and death- registers, partially also called soul registers, were introduced. The dates of births specified in this chronicle are usually in the first centuries christening data. Zell and Altbach belonged at that time (since 1424) to the monastery municipality of Adelsberg. This might be the reason for the early beginning of the church books, as in other parts of Germany they started mostly far later. In 1807 Altbach and Zell came to the Esslingen municipality. Today Altbach is an independent municipality of about 7000 inhabitants and Zell part of the city of Esslingen.

 

Jakob Frick lived in a moved time. 1519 he witnessed heavy devastations and acts of revenge by Esslinger citizen, after Duke Ulrich of Wuerttemberg with his troops tried to conquer Esslingen in vain.� On May 1st 1525, in the year of the famous German farmers war (Bauernkrieg),� riot farmers set the monastery under fire after plundering it thoroughly . Among others: a Leonhard Frick of Zell, "despising fine and oath forbidding, escaped perjured, and therefore embarrassing accusation (torture) indebted, was 1526 released from prison and punished with a large frevel (36 guldens)". Frick left his homeland and returned only 1562 again back with payment of 10 guldens fine. (Source 06- p. 34 f. and p. 65).

 

Already 70 years earlier, in 1449/50, Zell and Altbach were heavily devastated by the consequences of the St�dtekrieg (city war) under 31 cities.

 

The name FRICK is very old. According to volume 3 of the historical-biographic encyclopaedia� of Switzerland the name is found in the cantons Aargau, Appenzell, Graubuenden, Bern and Zurich. The Aargauer Frick sex is proven since 1430, but become extinct in the first half of� the18th.century. A Ministerialengeschlecht (those are service people of the princes, who were endowed with hereditary fief) named� "von� Frick" (of Frick), which had its master seat in the village "Frick", is mentioned in history� in 1227 for the first time (and then to beginning 15 th century. The oldest� documentary mention of the name dates thus from the year 1227 in the village chronicle of the village Frick in the Kanton Aargau/Switzerland.

 

Old sexes with the name FRICK are known also in Thuringia, Saxony, Hanover and elsewhere in Germany, particularly however in Wuerttemberg. (Ravensburg, Sigmaringen, Tuttlingen, Ulm, Freudenstadt and in the Stuttgart/Esslingen area). The relationship to the today still existing Frick lines, in particular on the evangelist - protestant side with the different other lines abroad could not be worked out yet.

 

The city reverend and genealogist Dr. Gottfried Maier from Tuebingen published the following in the year 1930:

 

FRICK, this proud name, is known already in Wuerttemberg in the 14th. and 15th. century. In July 1388 the Tuchmacher (fabric maker) Cuntz Frigg and its wife Dyna from Reutlingen sold two houses in . From 1427 an interest payment of� Alberli Frick to the monastery Marchtal is mentioned.

 

1474 Elsa Friggin to Reutlingen is mentioned. In Erpfingen 1454 landowners Ludwig and Eberhard Frick are mentioned. By the Wuerttemberg count a hereditary property was lent to the latter. In Pfullingen 1476 land damage was estimated worth as one gulden for Hans and Anna Frickin, as well as for Berchthold, the Frickin daughterman (means son-in-law). In 1431 a Konrad Frick of Berolzheim, son of Peter Frick of Berolzheim, died.

 

In the late middle ages and the early modern times a uniform way of writing names was not yet usual. The reverends registered names according to their subjective phonetic feeling. Between c and k they did not differentiate usually. Frick was filed also as Frik or Frickh. Other sources mean, Frick is a short form for Friedrich (Frederic)

Notes for LEONHARD FRICK:

Entries are of two marriages with total seven (four an three) children. Both marriages mention the same godfathers� in the baptismal Register. Leonhard Frick is the founder of the Altbach line, i.e. the first Frick from Zell, who married to Altbach. Only many years later, around 1747, a Frick from Zell� married again to Altbach,,

Johann Jakob Frick, born 4.4.1715, �Jacobs son of Zell�.

 

Leonhard Frick experienced the 30 years war (1618-1648). At� July� 8 1628 the imperial regiment Montecucculi� reached Esslingen and came on booty courses to� close villages on� July 19 1628 to Altbach.. In the church book the reverend Lorenz Klein� noted:

"Augustinus Bauer, Praetor (Mayor), age 61 years, was deplorable wounded, struck and tortured at the table by the soldiers quartered July 19, early in the morning dead in bed found ".� On �September 5� 1634 the Sweden army was struck near of� Noerdlingen.

As a result of the escape it came to further devastations in Altbach. Most inhabitants fled to Esslingen. Only half a year later they returned emaciated by hunger to Altbach.

 

Plague and hunger typhoid fever prevailed, which let 131 persons die, a third of the population at that time. Between 1635 and 1656 no marriages were registered in the church book. Numerous families and sexes had become extinct and had moved away. Exit of the war only the sexes Anckelen, Barth, Beichter, Frick, Huten, Lang, Maier, Spieth,� Sch�fer, Schmied, Schickler, Schweizer, Weber lived in Altbach. Only 1680 the birth rate rose gain. Leonhardus is the youngest of seven children, who were born in two marriages between 1640 and 1659. Christmas 1689 the Altbacher citizen escaped the troops of the French General Melac, which had before already occupied Esslingen and Stuttgart. While neighbour villages were plundered and devastated, Altbach remained this time spared. In the time of Leonhardus Frick the character of the village changed from a catholic monastery place to an evangelist vine- and agricultural village.��

"1760, on May 7, died his three years old widow Maria Katharina born. Eppinger, old 55 years 4 months� minus 8 days�. Three years old widow means: being a widow since three years

 

The high children mortality at that time was evaluated in Altbach between 1734 and 1793. About 30 per cent died of tuberculosis, force plunge, spasm, smallpox�s, asthma, measles, dysentery, diarrhoea and influenza. 40 percent of the adults died of so called� �heat illness�, like typhoid fever, lung inflammation and 15 per cent of tuberculosis. During the life of Hans Jerg Frick Altbach village started an own school (1732/33). From 1601 to 1732 Altbach students had to go to nearby Zell. In 1736 already 94 students were enrolled at Altbach School. A Hans Frick is mentioned with renovation works at the Ulrich�s-church in Altbach in 1748 (Source06: p. 173). Up to 1922 the village of Altbach was attended by the reverend of Zell.

Christian Frick was the youngest of ten children, who were born between 1728 and 1746 (Christian). His brother Johannes was likely involved into a wood theft in 1799, a� passing that at that time over centuries at the agenda was. A letter of the Forest office reports: "Furthermore the wood offender Johannes Eckhard and N. Notes for CHRISTIAN FRICK: In family register Vol. 1 Altbach� is noted, that Christian Frick in spring 1822 with woman and child (in 02- p.293 is noted : with 7 children) went to Bodelshofen near Wendlingen and from there �to Russia�. But Christian Frick settled� in 1830 yard place Nr. 71 in� Gnadental/Bessarabia.

 

In source 01� his origin is indicated� with Amt Mergentheim near of� Stuttgart. This is indicated also in 05, so that it is to be assumed that Christian Frick� left Wendlingen� before finally settling in Bessarabia.� After source 06� p. 101 the family lived only until 1845 in Gnadental.� Here the author errors, because obviously the sources 01 and 02 were not present. Christian Frick died 1844. The Frick line was continued by his son Christian, born 1815, and then Johannes, born1862.�

(an entry about Christian Frick is missing in� source 04). He had 12 children, five were stillborn. Beside from this he had (source 01 , p.119) three care children:

Harvest failures and price increases resulting from it determined the 19th. Century. It was particularly poor in Altbach 1816, when after a rainy winter and a following wet summer� potato and grain putrefied and the cattle died, so that in Esslingen even a public �hunger institution� had to be established.

 

About the emigration of the Altbacher citizen is to be read in the book of local history and geography of the municipality (06):

 

� The emigration to Russia concentrates on the years between 1817 and 1831. Also from Altbach a whole set of families and many individuals tightened to southern Caucasus to the east, starting from 1817. Two families Frick made the beginning:

 

1. Lorenz Frick, wine gardener, with its wife Katharina born. Stribel

and six children.

 

2. Johann George Frick, wine gardener, with wife Maria Katharina, born

Stribel, and six children.

 

Them Johann Michael Barth and Matthias Friedrich Eckert followed.

In the early morning of May 20 in the year 1817 they started, accompanied by benediction desires of the reaming people. On their wagons everything was stowed away, which they hoped to use in the new homeland: beside the necessary� household effects� the necessary tools for wine gardener and wagon builder, in addition all kinds of seeds, from which they wanted to pull far from the old homeland flowers and vegetable, as well as supplies of food for the long journey. The highest property however was the house bible, giving them comfort and confidence in good and bad days.

 

Johann George Frick took over the guidance of the first group of emigrants. The travel route was thoroughly scheduled.� First they passed the city of Ulm, from there by ship Danube downward across Vienna and Budapest up to the first Russian city Ismail, the terminal point of the ship journey. Ismail was at the same time quarantine station. After short stay the emigrants took the way over land, crossing the southern part of Bessarabia, over the river Dnjestr toward Odessa, where

the German settlement Gro�liebenthal already existed. Here two children of Johann George Frick died. He wanted to go still further southward. For this he needed a permission by the Russian tsar.

 

He travelled to Moscow and received permission for settling in Transcaucasia from the tsarina personally. Besides she gave to Frick a pearl necklace and a golden clock, which were still long time in the possession of the descendants to Frick. On the occasion of the attendance in Moscow

it is reported that Frick did not remove his hat during his visit with the tsar family On reproach of the ceremony master Frick is to have explained, only God he will prove this favour , tsar and tsarina are only humans like others.

 

Frick and all other emigrants from Wuertemberg now headed from Odessa over Cherson - Taganrog - Rostow to Tiflis. Among Armenians and Greeks they created their Swabian villages there such as Elizabethental, Katharinenfeld, Auenfeld, New-Tiflis, Alexandersdorf and Helenendorf near Ganscha. Four months after departure from Altbach they had reached on September 20 the final goal of� their journey.

 

As� last family Christian Frick left in 1822 with woman and seven children the place of residence in Wuerttemberg for settling .in Gnadental/Bessarabia. The latter on the journey to the east was Friederike Eckert. On April 9 1831 she started and obviously reached her goal, because the church book announces in a supplement, that she married there. With her the emigrant stream to the east ends, extracting within 14 years 61 inhabitants of Altbach.� In the main there were the families Barth, Frick and Stribel, belonging to the people moving away. By occupation most were farmers and� wine gardeners. In addition, we find craftsmen such as blacksmiths and carpenters among them.

 

What might have made the Altbacher citizen to emigration? Economic concerns and emergencies, released by harvest failures, contributed surely also to the emigration, however it might not have been decisive for the people mentioned above.� All emigrants belonged to the Altbacher middle

class. They owned so much property� that they could scrape through by hand works. Work and trouble expected them also in the new homeland. That was not the reason for the far journey with their inexpressible efforts and dangers. Russia had been described to them by the solicitors in enticing colors; but nevertheless something uncertain and unsure was expecting them.

 

The reason for leaving the old homeland is based� on religious sphere. The emigrants belonged to the pietisms. Although they were� faithful disciples of their Evangelist� church,� apart from� public services they had their own house services reading� the writings of Job. Michael Hahn, Albrecht Bengel, Jung-Stilling and other ones.� In it the nearness of the return of Jesus Christ was prospected. According to Albrecht Bengels calculation 1836 should be the beginning of the thousand-year� peace realm, in which Christ after his glorious return will prevail over the world.� In expectation of this visible return of Christ the Altbacher citizen moved� eastward� more than 180 years ago. They� hoped to be there closer to the salvator than in the old homeland. Their imperturbable faith let them bear all toilsomenesses and emergencies patiently. When their hope for the thousand-year old realm became destroyed, they already left a new homeland to their descendants.

 

For the state however Frick and its people were "dangerous sectarians� and� �conspirating separatists�. Secret service and Department of State in Stuttgart investigated them and Magister Wunderlich, reverend in Zell and Altbach, wrote an essay "history and principles of the conspired sect come into being in Altbach in 1813�.

 

The history of the settlement in Gnadental and the later resettlement to Eichendorf (1908) as well as the resettlement in the Warthegau Poland in 1940 is in detail and descriptive described in the German chronicles of Gnadental (01) and� Eichendorf (02).� This gen-tree will be supplemented in 2004 by

this� chapter of the family history.
